Pop Vertigo: Push

Pop Vertigo: Push

Overview

Song Title: Push

Artist: Matchbox Twenty

Food Reinterpretation: Push Pop Candy

Concept: A comedic reinterpretation of Matchbox Twenty’s “Push,” focusing on the literal act of using a Push Pop candy.

Logline: A person navigates the intense, push-and-pull dynamics of their relationship… with a brightly colored Push Pop.

Director’s Vision: Visually literal, playfully comedic, and tonally ironic. Emphasize the physical action of pushing the Push Pop candy up and down, contrasting the mundane object with the song’s raw emotional intensity.

Act Breakdown

Act 1

Lyric/Visual: “She said, ‘I don’t know if I’ve ever been good enough'” – Our lead is an artist. Then has drawings that they are working on. Shaking their head about their latest creation.

Lyric/Visual: “I’m a little bit rusty” – Our lead crushes up something in their hands and tosses it with disgust.

Lyric/Visual: “By a hand that’s touched me” – A hand touches them on a shoulder to try to console them, but they turn away.

Lyric/Visual: “And I’m a little bit angry” – They push all of their supplies off of the table.

Lyric/Visual: “Well, this ain’t over” – The lead storms away and looks in a dresser for what we assume is more art supplies.

Lyric/Visual: “Yeah, we just might feel good” – The lead is shown to be pulling open a drawer full of push pops. They tear one open.

Act 2

Lyric/Visual (Chorus): “I wanna push you around / Well, I will, well, I will” – The lead starts twirling and dancing around with the push pop.

Lyric/Visual (Chorus): “I wanna take you for granted” – The lead playfully teases the push pop and looks at it and away from it. Caresses it gently and gives it kisses.

Lyric/Visual: “She said, ‘I don’t know why you ever would lie to me'” – While opening the drawer, a Ring Pop is discovered and the camera lingers on the open drawer and the Ring Pop.

Lyric/Visual: “And I don’t know why you couldn’t just stay with me” – The lead starts apologizing to the push pop and looks for forgiveness.

Act 3

Lyric/Visual: “When my face don’t seem to wanna shine / ‘Cause it’s a little bit dirty” – We now see the lead in the dark of night with a shovel and dirt on their hands and face.

Lyric/Visual: “Well, well, don’t just stand there / Say nice things to me” – The lead is pleading with the Push Pop for forgiveness while they continue digging

Lyric/Visual (Bridge): “Things get so crazy, crazy / Don’t rush this, baby” – Lead picks up the Push Pop and walks away from the buried Ring Pop and takes the top off but then puts it back on.

Camera Reveal: When leaving the scene of the burial, we see the lead trip over something. Turn back and show a Tootsie Roll Pop.
